Vic's Picks: Music That Makes Moms Think of Their Kids

2 Min Read

Vic's Picks has the music-loving staff of Victrola sharing our bests, our favorites, our recent discoveries, and our musical memories.

This weekend is Mother’s Day, the day where we honor the first connection we all had to music: Studies say that you can hear music in the womb as early as 23 weeks, when you are only one pound.

To celebrate, Victrola asked some of the moms on staff to share the music that most makes them think of the people that made them moms: their kids. You can read that below:

“Boy” by Lee Brice

When I was pregnant, I learned I was having a boy, and this song came on shortly after. I remember feeling so overwhelmed and excited. Now when I hear it, I’m reminded of a time when I had no idea what my life would look like next - and how different and true it turned out to be!

Anything by Coldplay

This is a tough one because there's so many life-stages that conjure up different memories, from the Wiggles to Post Malone. When my son was born in 2004, I was heavily into the first two albums from Coldplay - they were like lullabies for both of us during that challenging and wonderful time. Then we had a full-circle moment by going to the Coldplay concert just last year. So I'd say they stand out. Especially Parachutes.

“Happy Song” by Imogen Heap

I'm a new mom, and my husband and I both promised each other we would start our son's music education early and avoid baby songs for as long as possible. Joke's on us, because I'm pretty sure Imogen Heap's “Happy Song” is going to be my most streamed of the year. We did, however, successfully make our baby a sleep playlist that knocks him out Pavlov style. “Until We Meet Again” by Hermanos Gutierrez is my favorite to play him while he drifts to sleep. Soaking it all in!

Disney Soundtracks

My little one is turning two this month, so we're deep in our Disney era - The Little Mermaid and Moana are dominating my Spotify playlists right now. The one song (aside from Disney) that gets me every time is “Never Grow Up” by Taylor Swift - I play this for her all the time and it really tugs at all the emotions of having a young child.

“Baba O'Riley” by the Who, “Barbie World” by Aqua, “You Wreck Me” by Tom Petty and “Ruby Soho” by Rancid

My kids live in a thousand songs. From “Baba O’Riley” to “Barbie World,” music lit up their little moments. The list is endless, but that’s the point. Every song holds a memory, and I get to keep them all.
